Sections of Georgia’s new immigration law blocked but not the required use of E-Verify

A federal judge blocked sections of Georgia’s HB 87, a law targeting illegal immigration, including a provision that authorized police to check the immigration status of suspects without proper identification and to detain illegal immigrants.  However, most of the bill remains intact including  a requirement that employers  with 10 or more employees check the  employment eligibility of new hires using E-Verify.  This requirement will be implemented in stages starting January 1, 2012.  Employers should try to remain informed of the requirements of the growing number of immigration related state laws.
